Dear all,
After chatting with some film discussion ‘regulars,’ I decided to not have a discussion over the Easter weekend because many folks are unavailable. BUT I will be sending an Easter post later this week with some poems and info on a wonderful Easter film.
If you missed it, you can watch last Saturday’s great discussion of Run Lola Run HERE.
Below are the upcoming film watching/ discussion schedule. Please remember that you can join at ANY time! This is not a typical class—more like a ‘join when you can’ RESOURCE. And you can always go back and watch videos/ read as a resource when you watch a film.
I apologize that the film order has changed—but I was accommodating some speakers and my travel schedule. It’s been a busy time!
The following film lectures/ posts/ discussions will only be available for paid subscribers. You can upgrade your subscription now to join!
April 1: Our next film is Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick. There will be a live Zoom film discussion on Saturday, April 6 at 2 pm Eastern Time. Dutch film director Jaap van Heusden will be joining us from Utrecht!
April 8: I will be joined this week by professor, writer, and film critic Jeffrey Overstreet. His choice for us is the lovely film Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. Check out his great substack Give Me Some Light! As I will be at the Festival of Faith and Writing on the weekend of April 13th, I will be posting my discussion with Jeffrey on Saturday the 13th rather than hosting a live discussion.
April 14: This week’s film will be Barbie! We will meet to discuss the film on Saturday, April 20th at 3 pm (note the time change).
April 20: We will be joined by the brilliant theologian Cheryl Bridges Johns to discuss the classic Swedish film The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman. The discussion will be on April 27th at 2 pm ET.
April 29: This week’s film is Woody Allen’s Crimes & Misdemeanors. We will discuss it on Saturday, May 4 at 2 pm ET.
May 6: This week’s film is Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón. I will be speaking at the Hutchmoot UK conference on the weekend of May 4th, so I will upload an informative video rather than host a live discussion.
May 13: Our discussion of Michael Haneke’s Code Unknown will be on Saturday May 18th at 2 pm ET. We will be joined by sociologists Dr. Ruthie Wienk and Dr. Arlie Tagayuna.
May 20: This week’s film is Spike Lee’s seminal film Do the Right Thing. We will have a live discussion with Dr. Jemar Tisby and Rev. Tyler Burns on Saturday, May 25th at 2 pm ET. Check out Dr. Tisby’s substack Footnotes!
Our June films will be Memento, 8 1/2, Stories We Tell, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
If you are in the area or feel like traveling, please come see me at the Illuminate Conference!
As always, thanks for reading!
